Bowel Management

This course is aimed towards residential and community healthcare professionals working with service users suffering from any form of spinal injury or dysfunction.

Following this session attendee’s will have a greater understanding of Bowel management as a result of spinal cord injuries and potential risks. Delegates will develop knowledge on the importance of bowel regime and medication and by end of the session understand how to manually evacuate the lower bowel.

The syllabus covers such topics as:

  • What is Bowel management following SCI?
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Understanding the importance of maintaining bowel regime and normal function
  • What is incontinence and constipation
  • Contributing factors to incontinence
  • Factors affecting bowel management
  • Develop knowledge in the anal rectal stimulation procedure
  • Care management and use of hygiene procedures and infection prevention and control procedures
