This course is aimed at those working with or responsible for the welfare and well being of individuals with epilepsy.

Training will facilitate best practice guidelines and ensure that all attending will have the necessary skills and knowledge to provide a safe, effective environment for the care of people living with epilepsy. Theoretical knowledge and skills will also be supported with a simulated practical based assessment.

Please note: Competency is achieved in the workplace following the training using a competency framework. Each procedure needs to be signed off by a qualified, senior member of staff as part of their personal development plan or supervision.

  • Definition of and facts about epilepsy
  • Classification and management of seizures
  • Ethical and legal responsibilities
  • Triggers and precipitants
  • Person centred care planning and recording
  • Risk assessment/promotion of safeguarding and dignity
  • Epilepsy, mortality and SUDEP
  • Status epilepticus
  • Buccal Midazolam: uses in epilepsy, side effects, administration
  • Rectal Diazepam: uses in epilepsy, side effects, administration
  • Rectal Paraldehyde: uses in epilepsy, side effects, administration
  • Emergency care plan and when to call an ambulance
  • Access to local and national support network
  • Competency framework and theory test
  • Applied practical workstation and simulated practical assessment
