The purpose of this Suppository Administration training is to provide guidance about the administration of suppositories for carers and nursing staff to provide this specific service.

At the end of this session delegates will be able to understand the anatomy and physiology of the bowel, offer lifestyle advice to promote good bowel habits, recognise the need for the administration of suppositories and administer suppositories safely.

Please note: A competency framework is included in this training. Competency is achieved in the workplace following the training. Each procedure needs to be signed off by a qualified, senior member of staff. The completed document can then be used to identify the individuals’ competence.

Course Summary

The syllabus covers such topics as:

  • Healthy bowel function
  • Major causes, signs and symptoms of constipation
  • Strategies used to maintain regular bowel evacuation
  • Bowel training goals and process to establish a regular elimination pattern
  • Recognition of when a suppository or enema is needed to assist evacuation
  • Administration of suppositories and enemas
