The Care Certificate is a set of standards aimed at equipping health and social care workers in the UK with the essential skills and knowledge required for their roles.

This CPD accredited e-learning course is designed for individuals who are new to the health and social care sector, particularly those who are starting roles as care workers, healthcare assistants, or support workers in various care settings. It’s based on the Care Certificate workbook, which was developed by Health Education England, Skills for Care and Skills for Health.

Developed as part of the response from The Cavendish review, The Care Certificate was launched in 2015 as a framework to ensure that all care and support workers have the same introductory skills, knowledge and behaviours to provide compassionate, safe and high-quality care, in their workplace settings.

It is the responsibility of the employer to ensure that all staff, including new staff, meet the fifteen Care Certificate standards. 

The course is often required for people working in regulated care environments in the UK and is intended to ensure that they have the fundamental skills, knowledge, and behaviors needed to provide high-quality care.

It is designed for individuals who are new to the health and social care sector, particularly those who are starting roles as care workers, healthcare assistants, or support workers in various settings such as residential care homes, nursing homes, or home care.

It is also suitable for staff who are moving into these roles from other sectors or for those who have never received formal training in care work.

The Care Certificate is a set of standards that define the knowledge, skills, and behaviors expected of healthcare support workers and adult social care workers in the UK. The 15 standards are:

  1. Understand Your Role: Understanding the responsibilities and expectations of your role within the healthcare or social care setting.

  2. Your Personal Development: Reflecting on your work and identifying areas for development and improvement.

  3. Duty of Care: Understanding your duty of care and how to provide safe and effective care while minimizing risks.

  4. Equality and Diversity: Understanding the importance of equality and diversity, and ensuring that care is delivered without discrimination.

  5. Work in a Person-Centred Way: Providing care that is centered on the individual needs and preferences of the service user.

  6. Communication: Developing effective communication skills to interact with service users, their families, and colleagues.

  7. Privacy and Dignity: Ensuring that the privacy and dignity of service users are maintained at all times.

  8. Fluids and Nutrition: Understanding the importance of providing proper nutrition and hydration to service users.

  9. Awareness of Mental Health, Dementia, and Learning Disabilities: Gaining awareness of mental health conditions, dementia, and learning disabilities to provide appropriate care.

  10. Safeguarding Adults: Understanding the principles of safeguarding and how to protect adults from abuse or harm.

  11. Safeguarding Children: Understanding the principles of safeguarding and how to protect children from abuse or harm.

  12. Basic Life Support: Learning the skills needed to perform basic life support in an emergency.

  13. Health and Safety: Understanding health and safety policies and procedures to ensure a safe working environment.

  14. Handling Information: Learning how to handle and store personal information securely, in accordance with data protection laws.

  15. Infection Prevention and Control: Understanding how to prevent and control the spread of infection in the care setting.
