This Nutrition and Hydration training course has been designed for all types of carers.

Key topics within this course cover ‘why a person receiving care may not be getting optimum nutrition and hydration’, ‘identifying possible outcomes of malnutrition and under hydration’ and suggests how these potential problems can be overcome by encouraging and supporting positive eating and drinking.

As a result of attending this Nutrition and Hydration training course, participants will be able to identify signs of malnutrition and under hydration, they will have discussed possible techniques to ensure service users are well nourished. Students will be able to identify the different food groups, know where to find them and the role they play in nutrition.

  • Nutritional care introduction
  • What prevents people from eating correctly?
  • What problems arise from malnutrition?
  • Timing of meals and snacks
  • The environment in which meals and snacks are served
  • Preparation of residents for meal times
  • Encouragement of independence and involvement in mealtimes
  • Providing support and encouraging service users to eat and drink
  • Risk assessing residents
  • How to spot the signs of malnutrition and using the Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool (MUST)
  • What do you do if you believe a service user is suffering from malnutrition?
  • What are the signs of being under hydrated?
  • Why might someone not be fully hydrated?
  • How can we encourage service users to keep hydrated?
  • The food groups and food safety
