The All Wales Manual Handling Passport Scheme (AWMHPS) is a comprehensive two-day practical training course designed to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to safely move and handle people and loads. Combining current legislation with extensive hands-on practice, the course supports safer working practices and a consistent manual handling approach across Wales.

Course information

The All Wales Passport scheme in Manual Handling was originally developed in 2003 by Health and Safety professionals within the NHS Trusts in Wales, to ensure high standards and consistency of manual handling within the NHS in Wales.

Designed for healthcare professionals, support workers, carers and anyone involved in moving and handling activities, this two-day course delivers the nationally recognised All Wales Manual Handling Passport Scheme. Through a combination of classroom learning and practical workshops, delegates develop the skills to safely move people, assess risks, use manual handling equipment correctly and apply current legislation within everyday practice.

Covering topics including risk assessment, bed mobility, transfers, falls management and hoisting, the course promotes safer outcomes for both staff and those receiving care. Successful completion provides a transferable qualification recognised across health and social care settings throughout Wales.

Please note: The practical equipment (bed & hoist) are essential to this training and will need to be made available for delegate use during this course.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this training, delegates will be able to:

  • Understand the principles and objectives of the All Wales Manual Handling Passport Scheme.
  • Explain the key legislation governing manual handling, including MHOR, LOLER, PUWER and the Health and Safety at Work Act.
  • Complete effective manual handling risk assessments using recognised assessment tools, including TILE.
  • Apply safe ergonomic principles when lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling inanimate loads.
  • Demonstrate safe techniques for assisting individuals with sitting, standing, walking and chair transfers.
  • Safely reposition individuals in bed using slide sheets and other approved equipment.
  • Recognise the appropriate response to a person who is falling, has fallen or has collapsed.
  • Carry out pre-use safety checks on hoists, slings and other manual handling equipment.
  • Demonstrate safe hoisting techniques whilst following care plans and organisational procedures.
  • Promote safe manual handling practices that reduce the risk of injury to both staff and individuals receiving care.
