Course information

This Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness course provides an introduction to Alzheimer’s, including how the condition affects the brain, memory, communication, mood, personality and everyday functioning. Delegates explore common signs and symptoms and consider the emotional impact of confusion, frustration and loss of skills. Practical activities and case studies help participants understand how dementia can affect perception and communication.

The course also introduces the VERA Framework, supporting compassionate communication through Validation, Emotion, Reassurance and Activity. Delegates consider how the care environment, sensory needs, personal history and meaningful activities can influence wellbeing, while exploring person-centred care planning and ways to promote dignity, comfort, control and a sense of purpose.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this training, delegates will be able to:

  • Explain what Alzheimer’s disease is and understand how it affects the brain.
  • Recognise common signs and symptoms associated with the different stages of Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Understand how Alzheimer’s can affect memory, communication, perception, mood, personality and functional skills.
  • Recognise how sensory and perceptual changes can affect an individual’s behaviour and experience of their environment.
  • Apply the principles of the VERA Framework to support compassionate and effective communication.
  • Identify environmental factors that may cause confusion, anxiety or distress and consider appropriate adaptations.
  • Understand the importance of an individual’s personal history, memories and interests when providing person-centred support.
  • Use meaningful activities and everyday tasks to promote involvement, control, confidence and a sense of purpose.
  • Understand the importance of person-centred care planning and involving individuals in decisions wherever possible.

Delivery methods

  • Face-to-face training (½ day / 1 day): This course is delivered on-site and accommodates up to 15 delegates. If discussed at the time of booking, it can be tailored to your organisation’s needs. 

  • Virtual training (½ day): This course can be delivered via Zoom or MS Teams to a maximum of 20 delegates. Virtual sessions are most commonly used as refresher training sessions.
