This Autism and Learning Disabilities - incorporating Oliver McGowan training course is designed to improve understanding and support for individuals with autism and learning disabilities in a care setting. Developed in response to the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training initiative, this healthcare training course aims to improve outcomes and prevent health inequalities for people with autism and learning disabilities.

This training is essential for healthcare workers, care staff, and social care professionals with a responsibility for the care and support for a person or people with autism and / or learning disabilities. It will equip them with the knowledge to recognise unique needs, communicate effectively, and make reasonable adjustments to enhance the quality of care.

The training course syllabus covers such topics as:

  • Legal Framework including MCA , Human Rights, Autism ACT and Safeguarding

  • Key differences between learning disability, autism, mental health conditions and learning difficulties
  • The process to be used to identify and assess learning disabilities
  • Indicators of learning disabilities and co-morbidities that would signal the need for further assessment

  • Addressing social exclusion, Improving opportunities and healthcare outcomes for people with a learning disability
  • How to access specialist services and support networks
