Course information

Basic Observation training is crucial for healthcare assistants and other health professionals working within a hospital setting because it equips them with the skills to accurately monitor and assess vital signs and other key health indicators.

This course will focus on why, when and how observations are conducted, the normal range for each observation and how to record as well as action to be taken outside the range are also covered. A detailed and most invaluable training course, observations covered include: temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, blood sugar levels, observations of specimens, neurological observations, and how to care for an unconscious patient. The course syllabus covers such topics as:

  • Physical observations – look, listen, feel and smell
  • Vital signs – temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, SPO2, BM and Glasgow Coma Scale
  • Specimens – urine, stool, vomit and sputum
  • Using NEWS2 tool to improve the detection and response to clinical deterioration in adult patients
  • Care of an unconscious patient
  • Practice conducting vital signs
  • Record keeping
  • ‘Track and Trigger’ systems

This course can be delivered to a maximum of 15 delegates and can be tailored to meet your organisation's specific needs. A full day option provides the opportunity for all delegates to participate in a practical workstation.

This course can be delivered via Zoom or MS Teams to a maximum of 20 delegates. Virtual sessions are most commonly used as refresher training sessions. Please note that there is no hands-on practical element in this training; practical elements are displayed using video examples.
