Course information

This Continence Management training course provides the knowledge and skills required to enable health and social care staff to be aware of the problems of incontinence and be able to work with this condition in a way which minimises the individuals’ distress.

This course will be delivered by a variety of teaching methods including: presentations; case studies; small group discussion; whole group discussion; individual work; video presentation. The course syllabus covers such topics as:

  • Factors that affect the management of continence
  • How incontinence may affect an individual’s well being
  • Methods which may be used to identify incontinence problems
  • Strategies to assist individual experiencing continence problems
  • Use of equipment to manage continence
  • Monitoring and reporting support for continence
  • Physiological and neurological functional effects of dementia, stroke, CVE, MS, spina bifida or spinal injury as well as patients with severe cognitive impairment or learning difficulties with regards to continence
  • Duty of care and person centred care planning

This course can be delivered via Zoom or MS Teams to a maximum of 20 delegates. Virtual sessions are most commonly used as refresher training sessions. Please note that there is no hands-on practical element in this training; practical elements are displayed using video examples.
