Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH)

This COSHH Awareness course introduces learners to the safe use, handling, storage and disposal of hazardous substances in the workplace. It is suitable for staff across health and social care, cleaning, domestic, maintenance and support roles who may come into contact with chemicals, bodily fluids, clinical waste, medicines, disinfectants or other hazardous substances.

Course information

The course covers the purpose of COSHH and the importance of managing hazardous substances safely to protect staff, service users and others. Learners are introduced to relevant legislation, including COSHH, Health and Safety at Work, RIDDOR, CLP labelling and PPE requirements.

Delegates will explore common hazardous substances found in care and workplace environments, including cleaning products, disinfectants, bodily fluids, laundry chemicals and clinical waste. The course explains how substances can enter the body, the short- and long-term effects of exposure, and the importance of reporting incidents and near misses.

The training course syllabus covers such topics as:

  • Explain the purpose of COSHH and why it matters in the workplace

  • Identify common hazardous substances found in health and social care settings

  • Describe employer, employee and supplier responsibilities under COSHH

  • Understand how COSHH links with wider health and safety legislation

  • Recognise CLP hazard symbols, warning labels and safety data sheets

  • Explain the key stages of a COSHH risk assessment

  • Identify suitable control measures, including safe systems of work and PPE

  • Describe how to respond safely to spills, contamination and exposure incidents

  • Recognise how hazardous substances can affect the body

  • Follow safe procedures for storage, disposal, documentation and reporting

This course can be delivered to a maximum of 15 delegates and can be tailored to meet your organisation's specific needs.
