CPAP and BiPAP Awareness

Our CPAP and BiPAP Awareness training develops knowledge of non-invasive ventilation and how to safely support individuals using these devices. Designed for care professionals, the course covers respiratory physiology, CPAP, BiPAP and APAP, sleep apnoea, Type 2 respiratory failure, equipment, assessment and practical care interventions to promote safe, effective support.

  • Suitable for: Nurses, HCAs, care staff

  • Delivery method: Face-to-face / Virtual training

  • Course length: ½ day

Course information

This CPAP and BiPAP Awareness course provides delegates with a practical understanding of non-invasive ventilation (NIV) and how it can support individuals with respiratory conditions. The training explores respiratory anatomy and physiology, how NIPPV works, and the differences between CPAP, BiPAP and APAP. Delegates will also learn about common indications including obstructive sleep apnoea and Type 2 respiratory failure, alongside equipment and mask types, assessment and monitoring requirements, machine use, cleaning and maintenance.

The course considers person-centred care interventions, including skin care, nutrition and hydration, tolerance and compliance, as well as potential complications and when an escalation plan may be required.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this training, delegates will be able to:

  • Explain the principles of non-invasive ventilation (NIV) and non-invasive positive pressure ventilation (NIPPV).
  • Understand the basic anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system.
  • Explain how NIPPV works and the role of positive airway pressure.
  • Understand the differences between CPAP, BiPAP and APAP.
  • Recognise common indications for NIV, including obstructive sleep apnoea and Type 2 respiratory failure.
  • Identify common equipment and NIV mask types.
  • Understand the importance of appropriate assessment and monitoring during NIV therapy.
  • Recognise the observations that may need to be monitored and documented, including respiratory rate, heart rate, oxygen saturations and work of breathing.
  • Understand the importance of following prescribed settings and manufacturer instructions.
  • Recognise appropriate care interventions, including airway, skin, nutritional and psychological care.
  • Identify factors that can affect tolerance and compliance with NIV.
  • Recognise potential complications and limitations associated with NIV.
  • Understand when concerns or changes in a person's condition may require escalation.
  • Understand the importance of supporting individuals to use NIV safely and effectively.

Delivery methods

Acute Training Solutions strive to deliver an engaging and informative learning experience in a safe and inclusive environment. All of our training courses are delivered by experienced healthcare professionals across the UK. This healthcare training course is available via the following delivery methods:

Please note that there is no hands-on practical element in this training; practical elements are displayed using video examples.

Course FAQs

This course provides an introduction to non-invasive ventilation and develops delegates' knowledge of how CPAP, BiPAP and related equipment are used to support individuals with respiratory conditions.

The course is designed for care professionals who support individuals using CPAP or BiPAP and want to improve their knowledge and understanding of non-invasive ventilation and safe patient support.

CPAP provides a continuous level of positive airway pressure, helping to keep the airway open. BiPAP provides two levels of pressure: a higher inspiratory pressure (IPAP) and a lower expiratory pressure (EPAP).

Yes. The course introduces APAP, or Automatic Positive Airway Pressure, which automatically adjusts pressure according to an individual's needs to help maintain an open airway.

The course covers obstructive sleep apnoea and Type 2 respiratory failure, as well as other conditions and circumstances where NIV may be used, including neurological and neuromuscular conditions.

Yes. Delegates learn about NIV equipment, mask types, device use, cleaning and maintenance, as well as the importance of following manufacturer instructions.

Yes. We deliver CPAP and BiPAP training nationwide and can provide training at your premises or through alternative delivery methods where appropriate.

Yes. Certificates are provided following successful completion of the course.
