Course information

TThis course is designed to build confidence in supporting people living with dementia through a person-centred approach. Participants will learn practical strategies to improve communication and reduce distress. The course considers the role of environment and sensory changes, and how small adjustments can support orientation, independence, and comfort.

The session includes guidance on positive risk-taking and person-centred planning, helping staff to support safer decision-making while maintaining dignity, choice and quality of life. Learning objective include:

  • In-depth review of dementia, including the different types of dementia, common symptoms, and how dementia is assessed

  • How to support individuals living with dementia, focusing on memory, physical abilities, emotional wellbeing, relationships, intimacy and changes to visual perception

  • Understanding positive risk taking in dementia care, considering self-esteem, individual ability, personal history, and lifestyle choices

  • Promote person-centred planning, reinforcing the importance of respect, dignity, and overall wellbeing

  • Communication
