Course information

The Diabetes & Insulin course aims to teach attendees how to recognise the signs and symptoms of diabetes and irregular blood glucose levels, testing procedures, signs of complications, effective management techniques and ultimately to build knowledge and confidence in staff when supporting and caring for those suffering from diabetes. The course syllabus covers such topics as:

  • Understanding diabetes, its causes and different types

  • Signs, symptoms and diagnosis of diabetes

  • Treatment and management, including lifestyle, medication and insulin therapy

  • Safe insulin administration and associated legal considerations

  • Blood glucose monitoring, including capillary testing and continuous glucose monitoring (CGM)

  • Recognising and responding to hypoglycaemia and hyperglycaemia

  • Diabetes-related complications and their prevention

  • Supporting individuals with diabetes using a person-centred approach

  • Simulated workstation and clinical oversight

Please note: Competency is achieved using a competency framework in the workplace, following the training. Each procedure needs to be signed off by a qualified, senior member of staff as part of their personal development plan or supervision.
