Course information

Epilepsy affects thousands of people across the UK, and while many seizures resolve without intervention, prolonged seizures can become a medical emergency requiring prompt and appropriate treatment. This course provides delegates with the knowledge and confidence to recognise different seizure presentations, understand the risks associated with status epilepticus, and safely support individuals experiencing prolonged seizures. Delegates will gain an understanding of rescue medications, including Buccal Midazolam and Rectal Diazepam, alongside the importance of following individual care plans, organisational policies and medication protocols.

The course also explores safe administration techniques, legal responsibilities, post-seizure care and accurate documentation to promote safe, effective and person-centred care.

Please note: Competency is achieved in the workplace following the training using a competency framework. Each procedure needs to be signed off by a qualified, senior member of staff as part of their personal development plan or supervision.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this training, delegates will be able to:

  • Understand what epilepsy is and recognise different types of seizures.
  • Explain the signs, risks and treatment of status epilepticus.
  • Recognise when emergency rescue medication should be administered.

  • Understand the purpose and use of rescue medications e.g. Buccal Midazolam and Rectal Diazepam.

  • Follow individual care plans, medication protocols and organisational policies.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the correct technique for the different rescue medications.

  • Identify the potential side effects and ongoing monitoring required following administration.
  • Understand the legal responsibilities surrounding controlled drugs and medication management.
  • Provide appropriate aftercare, including monitoring recovery and documenting interventions accurately.
  • Know when emergency services should be contacted following a prolonged seizure.

Delivery methods

  • Face-to-face training (½ day / 1 day): This course accommodates up to 15 delegates and can be tailored to your organisation’s needs. The half-day option provides a theory-only session, while the full-day workshop provides the opportunity for all delegates to participate in a practical workstation.

  • Virtual training (½ day): This course can be delivered via Zoom or MS Teams to a maximum of 20 delegates. Virtual sessions are most commonly used as refresher training sessions. Please note that there is no hands-on practical element in this training; practical elements are displayed using video examples.
