Course information

Older adults, particularly those living with frailty, osteoporosis, dementia, or complex health conditions, are at increased risk of fractures and bruising, often following seemingly minor incidents. Early recognition and appropriate action can significantly improve outcomes, reduce complications, and support resident safety and wellbeing.

This training is suitable for care assistants, support workers, senior carers, healthcare assistants, nurses, and other professionals working in residential care homes, nursing homes, supported living services, and community care settings. Delegates will develop the confidence to recognise potential fractures and concerning bruising patterns, understand safeguarding responsibilities, and follow best-practice procedures for escalation, documentation, and ongoing monitoring.

The course reinforces the importance of accurate record-keeping, resident-centred care, and effective communication to ensure injuries are managed promptly, safely, and in accordance with organisational policies and regulatory requirements. Some of the key learning outcomes and topics covered include:

  • Recognising the signs and symptoms of common fractures in older adults.
  • Understanding fracture risk factors, including falls, osteoporosis, medication, and frailty.
  • Identifying red flags associated with head, spinal, hip, and pelvic injuries.
  • Taking immediate and appropriate action when a fracture is suspected.
  • Recognising, assessing, and managing bruising in elderly individuals.
  • Understanding the impact of medications, health conditions, and ageing on bruising.
  • Recording injuries accurately using body maps, incident reports, and care documentation.
  • Identifying safeguarding concerns and following appropriate escalation and reporting procedures.
