Laryngectomy, the surgical removal of the larynx, often necessitates complex post-operative care, including management of a tracheostomy, stoma care, and assistance with alternative communication methods. Proper training ensures that healthcare providers can address potential complications, such as infections or breathing difficulties, promptly and effectively.

  • Reasons for and denfinition of laryngectomy
  • Care after laryngectomy surgery
  • Types of tubes and procedure for their removal and change
  • Communication and diet
  • Suctioning – aims, indicators, complications and procedure
  • Humidification
  • Resuscitation including the use of an ambu bag
  • Ethical and legal responsibilities
  • Competency framework and theory test

Please note: A competency framework is included in this training. Competency is achieved in the workplace following the training. Each procedure needs to be signed off by a qualified, senior member of staff. The completed document can then be used to identify the individuals’ competence.

This course can be delivered to a maximum of 15 delegates and can be tailored to meet your organisation's specific needs. A full day option provides the opportunity for all delegates to participate in a practical workstation.

This course can be delivered via Zoom or MS Teams to a maximum of 20 delegates. Virtual sessions are most commonly used as refresher training sessions. Please note that there is no hands-on practical element in this training; practical elements are displayed using video examples.
