Course information

Moving and handling children requires a different approach from adult manual handling. Every child has unique physical, developmental, emotional and communication needs that must be considered when planning and carrying out handling activities safely. This course promotes a child-centred approach, ensuring that the child's comfort, dignity, wellbeing and individual abilities remain central to every decision.

Throughout the course, learners are encouraged to apply the principles of person-centred, evidence-informed practice while recognising that every handling activity must be based on an individual assessment, the child's manual handling plan, organisational policies and current professional guidance.

The course syllabus covers such topics as:

  • Explain the principles of child-centred manual handling and recognise why every child requires an individual assessment and handling plan

  • Identify the principal legislation, regulations and safeguarding responsibilities that support safe paediatric manual handling practice

  • Recognise how developmental stages, disabilities, long-term conditions and individual abilities influence manual handling decisions

  • Describe common musculoskeletal injuries and explain how safer posture, movement and spinal awareness reduce the risk of injury

  • Carry out and contribute to suitable and sufficient manual handling risk assessments using recognised assessment processes

  • Apply the TILE or TILEO framework to assess the task, individual, load, environment and other relevant factors before handling begins

  • Select appropriate handling techniques, equipment and control measures that support both the child's safety and the safety of those providing assistance

  • Communicate effectively with children, young people, families and colleagues to promote cooperation, reduce anxiety and support positive handling experiences

  • Demonstrate the principles of safe team handling, including planning, leadership, coordination and clear communication throughout the activity

  • Apply safe lifting and moving principles while promoting dignity, comfort, participation, independence and positive outcomes for babies, children and young people
