Course information

Promoting independence means supporting people to do as much as they can for themselves, rather than automatically taking over. Even small opportunities to make choices, complete part of a task or communicate a preference can strengthen confidence, self-esteem, dignity and overall wellbeing.

Throughout the course, learners are encouraged to focus on strengths, abilities and potential. The aim is to support people to become active participants in their care while maintaining safety, dignity, comfort and individual choice.

Learning outcomes include:

  • Explain how person-centred practice can increase participation, independence and control during personal care

  • Recognise how culture, religion, disability, gender, sexuality, identity and individual preferences may influence personal care needs

  • Maintain dignity, privacy, respect and human rights while providing intimate or personal support

  • Identify opportunities for people to complete all or part of a task independently and avoid providing unnecessary assistance

  • Adapt personal-care support for autistic people and people with learning disabilities, including sensory, communication and routine-based needs

  • Use communication strategies, visual supports, prompts, task analysis and reasonable adjustments to improve understanding and participation

  • Apply independence-promoting approaches across activities of daily living, including washing, dressing, eating, mobility and toileting

  • Support consent and decision-making in accordance with the Mental Capacity Act, including supported decision-making and least restrictive practice

  • Use assistive technology, structured routines, graded prompting and goal setting to develop confidence and practical skills

  • Recognise pressure-area and skin-integrity risks, record concerns accurately and escalate changes in accordance with organisational procedures
