Course information

This Rectal Administration training equips participants with the essential skills and knowledge to safely and effectively administer rectal treatments, such as suppositories or enemas, while maintaining the dignity and comfort of the patient. It covers the anatomy involved, proper techniques, hygiene practices, and relevant legal and ethical considerations.

Following the session, delegates will be able to understand the anatomy and physiology of the bowel, offer lifestyle advice to promote good bowel habits, recognise the need for the administration of suppositories/enemas and administer suppositories or enemas safely. This clinical course covers such topics as:

  • Healthy bowel function
  • Major causes, signs and symptoms of constipation
  • Strategies used to maintain regular bowel evacuation
  • Bowel training goals and process to establish a regular elimination pattern
  • Recognition of when a suppository or enema is needed to assist evacuation
  • Administration of suppositories and enemas

  • Simulated workstation and clinical oversight (Practical session only)

Please note: A competency framework is included in this training. Competency is achieved in the workplace following the training. Each procedure needs to be signed off by a qualified, senior member of staff. The completed document can then be used to identify the individuals’ competence.

This course accommodates up to 15 delegates and can be tailored to your organisation’s needs. The half-day option provides a theory-only refresher, while the full-day includes a simulated workstation with clinical oversight. Please confirm your preference when booking.

This course can be delivered virtually via Zoom or MS Teams for up to 20 delegates. Online sessions are theory-based and most suitable for refresher training.
