Course information

Spinal Injury Awareness training is crucial for nurses and health care assistants because it equips them with specialised knowledge to effectively manage and support patients with spinal injuries. 

This training course provides attendees with a greater understanding of the care implications as a result of spinal cord injuries and potential risks. Delegates will develop knowledge on the importance of the management and care of a patient with spinal cord injury and by end of the session understand its importance. The course syllabus covers such topics as:

  • Understanding the normal spinal anatomy

  • Understanding the types of spinal cord injury

  • Understanding autonomic dysreflexia and the importance of prompt intervention

  • Understanding bladder management in relation to spinal cord injury including catheterisation and catheter care
  • Understanding bowel management in relation to spinal cord injury including the management and evacuation of reflex and flaccid bowel
