Course information

Stoma care training is essential for healthcare workers, care staff, and nurses because it equips them with the knowledge and skills to properly care for patients with stomas, ensuring their comfort, hygiene, and overall health.

This Stoma Care training course considers the reasons for and the process involved with colostomy care in day to day living. Training will cover best practice guidelines and ensure that all attending will be better suited to delivering care for people who require stoma care. The course covers such topics as:

  • Introduction to Colostomy Care
  • Types of colostomies, ascending, transverse, descending and sigmoid
  • About the stoma
  • How colostomy affects work, social life, clothing, showering, bathing, exercise, travel, sexual life and diet
  • How diet can control excessive gas, odour, diarrhoea and constipation
  • Medicines and your colostomy
  • Selecting appropriate colostomy bag
  • Assessing the stoma and skin
  • When to call a doctor

Please note: A competency framework is included in this training. Competency is achieved in the workplace following the training. Each procedure needs to be signed off by a qualified, senior member of staff. The completed document can then be used to identify the individuals’ competence.
